I consider these pieces more like art therapy, they are quick, colorful and expressive. They relate to love, to intimacy, to connection, or the lack of it. The sparse backgrounds are like a shelter for two people trying to share a life, at once protected but also isolated in their own joint world. The background is cold, wintery.
Recently I made a group of abstract backgrounds. I started with dribbles and drops of white glue. When it dried, I generously covered the entire back ground with watercolor and ink. I love the texture the dried glue gives. I used some of the background for visual journals, and on a couple I drew pairs of hares.
The image of the hare is so compelling to me. They are sort of cute, but definitely have more grace and gravitas than a bunny. I love the curve of their head, and their complex eyes. They have awkward bodies. I drew the figures first with graphite, then went over the lines with red watercolor. The graphite is water soluble and dissolved into the paint, darkening the line. Other than a few details, the hares are colored by the original background, and I used gesso to carve them out and separate them.
